A scene from Cats AMBLIN ENTERTAINMENT
Cats, the film adaptation of the hit musical, was recently released to generally negative reviews. This highly anticipated all-star movie currently has an 18 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The general critic consensus is that the film was a “mistake.” Cnet calls the movie “a seriously unique disasterpiece”. Creepy CGI cat-human characters, repetitive music and an overall failure of adapting the musical to the silver screen are all criticisms that have been thrown at the movie.
Cats has made only $6.5 million (45.5 million yuan) in its first weekend at the box office. Universal removed Cats from its For Your Consideration campaign page, where the studio advertizes its films for Emmy Award consideration, days after the movie’s release.
Despite the critical reception, Cats has received two award nominations including one Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for Beautiful Ghosts, co-written by Taylor Swift.
